Gladstone-Negroponte Affair
How did Menelaus Zannis Negroponte (1838-1893), by all accounts a simple Constantinople merchant, become embroiled in a British political imbroglio – a media circus, wild accusations, a libel case – involving the esteemed politician William Ewert Gladstone (1809-1898)?
