Notes |
- Aglaia Agelasto was aunt and god-mother to Arghyro Frangopoulos b. 1864.
- Mayerling Affair. Marie Vetsera, who was murdered by Archduke Rudolph of Austria, was Aglaia Baltazzi's first cousin once removed, the granddaughter of Theodore Baltazzi of Constantinople, her father Jean's elder brother in the so-called Mayerling [Meyerling] Affair. In 1889, some twelve years after Aglaia died, Marie, Baroness Vetschera, née Baltazzi, died along with her lover in a grusome crime, which has to this day never been solved. The New York Times in 1917 speculated that Count Baltazzi, a cousin, murdered Marie, his fiancée, and her lover. In revisiting the events Time Magazine in 1926 referred to Maria's grandfather as 'one Baltazzi, "a dirty Greek," who amassed millions'. Speculation suggests single or double suicide, or a murder/suicide, or a double murder. The Count Baltazzi, who was intending to marry his cousin (and knew of her infidelity so the story goes) might have been Aglaia's cousin of some sort, also. None of the names matches her father's nor those of the Baroness' brothers, Aristide and Hector.
Historian/genealogist George Vassiadis tells the story of Marie Vetsera: her mother Helen Baltazzi, the daughter of Theodore Baltazzi, married an Austrian diplomat by the name of Albin Vetsera, who was created an Austrian baron. Helen Baltazzi Vetsera and most of her siblings settled in Vienna, where their fortune (and love of horses) enabled them to move amongst the aristocracy. Her daughter, Marie, was introduced to Archduke Rudolph, the only son and heir of Emperor Franz Joseph. Rudolph was an unstable character and probably suffered from syphilis and probably also some sort of mental illness. He and Marie are thought to have become lovers. Some time after they met they went to Rudolph's hunting lodge, where he is thought to have shot Marie and then himself. Naturally, the Austrian court did everything it could to cover up the scandal, and two of Marie's uncles were summoned to the hunting lodge to retrieve her body, which was buried in secrecy at a nearby cemetery. Rudolph was officially reported to have died in a hunting accident. Eventually some details slipped out, but to this day the exact reasons for the murder-suicide remain unknown. Unsurprisingly, Marie's Vetsera and Baltazzi relatives were practically ostracised after the tragedy. Some excellent books have been written about the tragedy, but most are full of errors when it comes to their presentation of the Baltazzi family.
