John Calvocoressi, of Liverpool, initiated bankruptcy 18 Oct 1869 (London Gazette 19 Oct 1869). John Calvocoressi and James F. Psalfy were partners as Canvas and Bagging Merchants, Liverpool, until partnership was dissolved 6 May 1869 (London Gazette 18 May 1869). J. Calvocoressi is listed among a delegation which met with Lord Derby of the Foreign Office to discuss the British role in and the threat to Greek merchants' interests due to strife between Greece and Turkey (The Times [London], 6 Feb 1878). The 1881 England census: 9 Devonport St, London household headed by John M. Calvocorissi, 34, retired merchant; Arghiro, 32, both b. Constantinople, Turkey; sons Matthew, 8, b. Liverpool; Pantia, 6, b. Nice, France; Leonidy, 2; George, 11 mos, both b. London; daughter Hypatia, 3, b. Broughton; & 5 servants. USA naturalization: 28 Feb 1871, before Court of Common Pleas, New York, New York. The date is given in his wife's and sons' US passport applications, as they quality for US citizenship through his naturalization. He was confined, from about 1880, to a lunatic asylum, Constantinople, according to US passport applications filed by his wife and children. John M. Calvocoressi, 22, swore before a notary in New York City, 11 Feb 1869, that he was born 27 Aug 1846, St. Augustine, Florida. This document thus certified his US citizenship.
