- Zoe Rodocanachi relates this anecdote from her grandmother, Eirene: At the time of the Crusades, the families of Rodocanachi and Petrocochino were in Byzantine. When the Turks captured the city, they escaped to the island of Chios, in A.D.1362, where they lived until A.D.1822, when the Turks sacked the island. Some members escaped to Trieste, from where they spread to various parts of Europe. One of the Rodocanachis (whose portrait keeps on our staircase) was carried as a baby away from Chios by his elder sister, who lost a shoe on the beach as she escaped!
