Notes |
- Occupation: Merchant
George Speis, a researcher in Greece, writes (March 2012):
Michael Agelastos, owner of the Zea Coal Company in the island of Kea, was partner at the «Agelastos & Sfezzo Cie» in Istanbul and was involved with the coal company from about 1895 until 1910 when it was bought by Mihalinos. Agelastos created the Zea Coal Company with Welsh coal to supply the British War Fleet at a very critical time of high tensions between the British Empire and The French-Russian coalition. The reason was to prevent the Russians from occupying Istanbul. He must have been a very fascinating person. He was a member of the British Ottoman Chamber of Commerce and must have had very close relations with Sir James Whittall of the Great House, who established the Chamber and was highly regarded as the richest Levantine.
- According to the Istanbul City Directories 1883-1897, one M. Agelasto, a merchant, of Agelasto Sfezzo & Co., 41 Arslan St., Pera, founded the Greek House in 1883, succeeded by H and N Agelasto. In 1887 M Agelasto was associated with Aristide C. Sfezzo, under the actual firm of Kutchuk, 56-58 Millet Han. They were steamship agents in the coal trade. According to the 1913 directory, one Michel Agelasto was a steamship agent, 24-26 Omer Abid Han, Galata and resided at 11 Rue Anadolou, Péra.
- His 1902 Istanbul directory listing says he resides in Athens.
- 4 Dec 1914: Michael Stam. Agelasto, 51, born Athens, swore allegiance to the Greek government.
- Residence: at DOD, Artis 4, Athens, Greece
- MICHAEL S(tamati) AGELASTO, aged 60, is included in his brother Demosthenes's hereditary title certificate, issued Mayor of Athens, 18 Jun 1923. [4]
- 1815 Vienna city directory lists Michael Agelasto under Negroponte Angerinos and Company. [5]
- The Zea Coaling Co., Constantinople, operating from 1888 out of Constantinople, Zea and Piraeus, Greece, Coal Merchants and Steamship Agents, Agelasto, Sfezzo & Co., Managers, Piraeus, are listed in the Lloyd's Register of Shipping, v 2, Wyman and sons, London, 1902.
