As the usual Greek pronunciation for the French "Monsieur" is "Messié", this could easily be distorted to "Missé". In Greek upper class families, the use of the French language was considered a sign of nobility (hence Jean/Zannis instead of the ordinary Ioannis). "Apprendre le francais et le piano" was a must for young females of the upper class. And I can imagine a "noble and rich" Greek (e.g. my grandfather´s grandfather) attaching importance to being addressed as "Monsieur Pavlís". (George Agelasto) | Agelasto, Paul (Stamati) (I519)

In fact, the young master was not present, however, as "it was most difficult for him to obtain leave of absence in the middle of his term at school" according to his father.
