Aitolia English (née Georgiadis) Former principal physician for child health Worcerstershire (b 1915; q University College Hospital, London, 1940; DCH), d 18 September 2010. Born in the Greek island of Syros, Aitolia English (née Georgiadis) ('Tolia') came to London after her father died in the 1918 flu pandemic because her mother wanted a better education for her daughters. After qualifying in 1940, Tolia worked first at UCH in obstetrics, and her call-up to the Royal Army Medical Corps was deferred until she gained her DCH at Birmingham Children's Hospital. After the war and marriage she worked in child health in Cheshire while bringing up three children. She moved to Alvechurch in 1969, specialising in child development. After retirement she helped to establish the Scott Atkinson Development Unit in Redditch for children with disabilities. She leaves a husband, Wilfrid; three children; and six grandchildren. Gill Haggie.
Obituary appeared in BMJ, 11 Dec 2010, v. 341, p. 1271.
