Mrs. Savaides taught in Arlington at Woodrow Wilson and Oak Ridge elementary schools, among others, from 1952 to 1975. She then became a substitute teacher in Arlington and for 10 years in Warren County, Va., public schools.

During her career, she was active within the NEA and received many awards. In 1954, she was selected to attend the NEA World Teachers meeting in Oslo. She also was one of six teachers in 1964 to serve as a delegate and later chairman of the NEA's Career Service Committee.

Mrs. Savaides was born in McCaskill, Ark., and attended Arkansas State Teachers College. She received a bachelor's degree in education from the University of Denver. She was an elementary school teacher in El Dorado, Ark., before working in Arlington.

She worked as a part-time receptionist for her son-in-law's business, Best Exterminating Services, for 20 years and retired three years ago.

She was a member of the Arlington and Warren retired teachers associations and the Pilot Club and was a life member of the Virginia PTA.

She loved ballroom dancing and participated in dance competitions in the United States, Mexico and Spain, representing the Arthur Murray and the Fred Astaire dance studios.

Her marriage to Clyde Byrd ended in divorce. Her husband, Harry Savaides, died in 1964.
