Mrs. and Mrs. John Ambrose Negroponte regularly appeared in the society pages of the Manchester Times, especially in the 'Belle to Phyllis' column. The ball given in the Manchester Assembly Rooms to honor the coming out of their daughter Maria in 1900 was, according to the columnist, "one of exceptional brilliance...seldom have the Assembly Rooms been so exquisitely decorated and so artistically illuminated." About 200 people attended and "the number would have been march larger had it not been for the prevailing epidemic [illegible] which kept many away at the last moment. Mrs. Negroponte's rich toilette was universally admired...[she] wore a diamond tiara. ("Mrs. Negroponte's Ball," Manchester Times, 12 Jan 1900). The guest list reads like a who's who of Manchester Greek society, the gown of each lady paintakingly described. For example, "Mrs. Theo Casdagli was also strikingly gowned in black, her dress being a mass of sequins over a petticoat of chiffon and relieved with red roses." "Mrs. Agelasto was richly gowned in black brocade and lace with touches of tourquoise on the bodice; and a beautiful dress of pink accordinan-pleated chiffon, the [?] draped half-way with Brussels lace, was worn by Mrs. Frangopulo [likely either Lucy Agelasto Frangopulo or one of her daughters-in-law]..." | Negroponte, John (Ambrosios) (I1185)
