Member of the Philiki Hetairai of Trieste. In 1818 he was corresponding from London with Adamantios Koraïs. Raised funds in London for the Greek cause and provided ammunition, etc.
In 1826 he oversaw the controversial construction of Greek warships in the USA. The two frigates generated substantial cost overruns and the matter went to arbitration, which he largely lost. He published a widely-distributed account of the events: A narrative of the material facts in relation to the building of the two Greek frigates, which generated a lot of press coverage in both the USA and Europe. In 1828 Capodistrias appointed him to acquire a mint for coin production (Malta). In 1856 he was Greek Finance minister and in 1857 President of the Greek parliament.
Alex. Contostavlo was in partnership with Stephen Franghiadi, as Contostavlo & Co., merchants, until 31 Aug 1824 and then continued the business alone (London Gazette 28 May 1825).
