Memorial to those Hanged on Chios, 23 Apr 1882
The plaque on this photo (see
below) is a supplement to the main monument, the obelisk.
The plaque inscription reads:
“At this place were killed
for their faith and their fatherland on the 23rd of April 1822,
together with the other hostages:

In this ‘Street of the
Martyrs’, along the moat of the Chios Castle, were hanged by the Turks on the
